There are tons of ways to get things done. Sometimes it’s through failure, other times it’s success, sometimes it’s by sheer luck. But on the very special occasions, things happen because of faith in the God of grace. You see, I always wanted to sing on the stage at The State on Woodward Avenue. No matter how much I practiced, no matter how good I got, it wasn’t enough. God was going to have to take care of this dream. While I waited, I started helping others live out their dreams. I taught lessons, instructed singers, helped with auditions, wrote arrangements. One day, an old student of mine called to tell me their band was performing in town. She wanted to know if I would do a duet with her. When I said yes, she told me where we’d be singing. It turns out The State is far better than I ever imagined it, but maybe that’s because God had his fingerprints all over me being there.

This story is based on Exodus 1: 18-21

Then the king of Egypt summoned the midwives and asked them, “Why have you done this? Why have you let the boys live?” The midwives answered Pharaoh, “Hebrew women are not like Egyptian women; they are vigorous and give birth before the midwives arrive.” So God was kind to the midwives and the people increased and became even more numerous. And because the midwives feared God, he gave them families of their own.

NIV: New International Version

You may have noticed that this scripture is not part of the liturgical reading for this week. Our church is doing a side journey through Exodus through the end of lent. Don’t worry, I’ll be back to the common lectionary soon.
